A tornado blew away the roofs of several shanties and uprooted large trees after it hit a residential area inside the Diliman, Quezon City campus of the University of the Philippines (UP) Thursday morning.

Nathaniel Cruz, chief of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical (Pagasa) weather branch, confirmed that homeowners and residents saw the tornado hitting C.P Garcia Street between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. last Thursday.

Citing witnesses account, Cruz said that rain poured hard with loud "whistling sound" before the roaring o f the tornado, which also damaged houses and uprooted electric posts.

The Pagasa weather branch head clarified that climate change had nothing to do with the tornado, which is associated with the monsoon season.

"Tornadoes are abnormal, but not highly unusual," he said.

Police reported that no one was harmed, while the National Disaster Coordinating Council is still determining the number of houses destroyed in the incident.

Meanwhile, residents of Metro Manila and Western parts of Central and Southern Luzon were advised Thursday to stay in their homes as Pagasa expects heavier rains to fall more frequently Friday.

Nonoy About, Pagasa forecaster who is now in charge of monitoring the weather disturbance, said that rainshowers and thunderstorms will fall harder an d more frequent today than the rains that commuters and motorists experienced onearlier days of this week because of the prevailing Southwest monsoon, called in Filipino “hanging habagat.”

“Rains have fallen continuously for two weeks now due to habagat. In fact, I think this will extend up to Wednesday next week,” About said.

At the same time, About cautioned sea operators, captains, and seafarers going to Palawan, Iloilo, Mindoro, and Zamboanga to watch out and avoid sudden big waves prevailing in the South China Sea, which is favorable to the blowing of Southwest monsoon.

The top weather forecaster also warned farmers in Central Luzon of possible floodings that could damage agricultural products, crops, and livestock.

In its latest weather update released 5 a.m Thursday, Pagasa reiterated that no tropical cyclone is expected or has been monitored to threaten the Philippine Area of Responsibility yet, explaining that the week-long rains were caused only by stronge Southwest monsoon, not a storm.

Chris Perez, another Pagasa weather forecaster, said that the monsoon trough and the low pressure area spotted at about 375 kilometers of extreme Eastern part of Luzon have intensified habagat resulting in widespread occasional rainfall in the last two weeks.

The weather bureau said the continuous raining will bring the temperature down to as cool as 24 degrees and as warn as 31 degrees Celsius.
